First Grade News

***Please remember to return your child's Homework Folder to school everyday.
***Please remember to send a snack and water bottle with your child every
day. No juice please because it is very sticky.
***Please remember sneakers for Gym class and smocks for Art class

***Our Specials are on a 5 day rotation.

If you are unsure the schedule, just send your child in his/her gym clothes!
**Wear your anti-bully shirts on Mondays throughout the year.
***Our field trip to Claws N Paws will be on Tuesday, May 21st. Please send in permission slip ASAP! No child is allowed on this trip without permission slip.




READING

04/29-05/03-We will be reading Thomas Edison, Inventor, "Windshield Wipers" "Scissors", and A Story of a Robot Inventor  in our readers .  We will be having our Reading Skills Test on Friday, 05/03.  This will be used as a FOURTH QUARTER GRADE.

****OUR LEVELED READING FOLDERS WILL BE COMING HOME EVERYDAY. WE ARE ASKING THAT YOU READ 15 MINUTES A NIGHT WITH YOUR CHILD.  PLEASE SIGN THE READING LOG AMD RETURN LOG, FOLDER, AND BOOK TO SCHOOL WITH YOUR CHILD EVERYDAY. THIS WILL HELP WITH YOUR CHILD'D FLUENCY AND READING RATE. WE WILL BE SENDING READING WRITING WORKSHOP READERS ON MONDAY.  PLEASE READ THE STORY AND SKILLS BEFORE THE STORY.  THIS IS A GREAT REVIEW.  IF THE STORY IS TOO DIFFICULT FOR YOUR CHILD, A BOOK ON THEIR LEVEL WILL ALSO BE SENT HOME.


        As the year goes on, you will receive a "Pencil Paper" that will be attached to our weekly newsletter. Doing the follow activities will help your child meet with success in First grade. 

.*** Please review the Sight Words and listen to your child read the story every night. When reading the story with your child, ask the following questions: Who are the main characters? What is the setting?(Where and when is the story taking place) What is the problem of the story? What is the solution? (How was the problem solved) What happened First, Next, Then, Last/Finally. (Sequence of events). This will help your child better understand the story.

 

****When reviewing Sight Words, these following tips may help you: Put the words on flashcards so that you can play games with your child. You can play memory or use a flashlight to shine on words that you want your child to read.  

**You can also put your words into sentences using past sight words.  This is what we do for our reading portion our tests.

 

 

Math

04/29-05/03- Our math series is called   "Everyday Math".  The children will be coming home with information and work that goes along with our chapters.  Please remember to check your child's Homework Folder every night.

We are working on Unit 8 in our Math books.  The skills are: building shapes withdefining attributes, halves, fourths, 2 and 3 dimensional shapes, time to the hald hour, number grid puzzles, and mentally finding 10 more and 10 less.

***We will be writing our numbers to 120 and will  also practice our +0 thru-9 facts and -0 to -10 facts. 

***Please review the addition and subtraction facts that were sent home with your child.  Review these facts daily


 

 

SPELLING
04/29-05/03 - We will be having our Spelling Test on Friday, 05/03. The words are as follows: born, corn, core, more, roar, soar, her, dirt, learn, and sure.. This is a written test and will count for your child's Fourth Quarter Grade. Please review these words every night with your child.
PHONICS
04/29-05/03 We will be working on words with the "or, ore and oar" spelling of words" . Some examples are: corn, more, and soar. We will continue reviewing the beginning and ending sounds of words, l-blends , "short " vowel sounds, and the long vowel spellings of words.

Homework

All homework will be marked with an "H" on your child's paper.  It will be found in the "Bring Back" side of your child's HOMEWORK FOLDER.

***YOUR CHILD WILL BE BRINGING HOME HIS/HER LEVELED READING FOLDER EVERY NIGHT.  PLEASE SIGN READING LOG AND RETURN THE BOOK AND LOG INSIDE THE LEVELED READING FOLDER EVERYDAY WITH YOUR CHILD.  THIS IS CONSIDERED HOMEWORK AND IS ON YOUR CHILD'S REPORT CARD.  IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU READ WITH YOUR CHILD FOR 20 MINUTES A NIGHT. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSTANT SUPPORT.
