Basic Facts

Helping children learn the basic facts is an important goal in the Everyday Mathematics curriculum. In this section, you can find out more about how the curriculum employs a variety of techniques to help children develop their "fact power", or basic number-fact reflexes.

Computation

Everyday Mathematics recognizes that, even in the computer age, it is important to teach children how to compute "by hand". Here you can read more about how the curriculum provides all students with a variety of dependable and understandable methods of computation.

Alternative Algorithms

Research has shown that teaching the standard U.S. algorithms for each of the four basic operations of arithmetic fails with large numbers of children, and that alternative algorithms are often easier for children to understand and learn. In this section, you can read more about how Everyday Mathematics introduces children to a variety of alternative procedures in addition to the customary algorithms.

Calculator Use

In the Everyday Mathematics program, emphasis is placed on using the calculator as a tool for learning mathematics. You can read more here about how the use of calculators is incorporated to provide practice with place value and problem-solving skills in the curriculum.

Meeting Individual Needs

English Language Learner (EL) Information:



Mission Statement

  • The mission of the English Language Development (ELD) Program in the Valley View School District is to provide instruction and support to foster the linguistic, academic, personal and social growth of English Learners (ELs).
  • The program focuses on fluency in the academic languages of English, Math, Social Studies and Science.





Program Goals



  • Facilitate English language acquisition through the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension.
  • Help students learn to use English effectively to participate and succeed in academic, social, extra-curricular, and community environments.
  • Provide educational experiences that will prepare students academically and will empower them with the skills and knowledge necessary to maximize their learning potential.
  • Help students and their families adapt to the school and the community.
  • Encourage students to continue to value and celebrate their cultural heritage, and maintain their native languages.





Identification





  • VALLEY VIEW SCHOOL DISTRICT must notify parents of the identification and programming options, and appropriately place the ELs into a language instruction educational program (LIEP).
  • This process must be completed within the first 30 calendar days of school or within 14 calendar days of enrollment if a student enrolls after the first day of school.







How to help your child at home:

  • Label objects around the house: Use simple labels in English to help your child learn new vocabulary.
  • Talk about daily activities: Engage in simple conversations about what you are doing throughout the day, using basic English.
  • Read together regularly: Choose books with simple sentences and lots of pictures.
  • Play language games: Use simple games like “I Spy” or “What’s missing?” to practice vocabulary.
  • Ask questions about school: Encourage your child to share what they are learning in class and ask questions if needed.
