8:15 -8:35 Breakfast: Breakfast will be available every morning for any student in the classroom. The breakfast is $1.30 daily. If your child qualifies, they can get a free or reduced ( $.30) breakfast.

8:30-8:40 Morning Routine: Attendance, lunch count, calendar, pledge

8:40-9:25  IE:  During this time, we will work on small group activities while some students leave the room for Title Reading or Math groups,  Speech, or other specialized classes.

9:25-10:10  Specials: Specials classes are on a a five day rotation. The order of the specials always stays the same but the day they fall on is different. I will send a calendar home each month with a schedule. Our schedule order is MPSCA  (the order stays CAMPS, but we have Music on day one).  Music, Phys Ed (Gym), STEM (engineering, science), Computers, Art.

There are a few students from our class in a combined class that goes by a different schedule. I will hand out a calendar. The order is still CAMPS, but they have STEM on day 1.

10:10 Snack:  Please send a small healthy snack and drink each day to help your child stay energized. We will be having snack in the morning since we have late lunch. Students receiving free lunch are not provided a snack by the school. All students need to bring their own snack. Students are allowed to have water bottles at their desk. If it becomes a distraction, the bottle will have to stay in their cubby.

10:25-12:15 Language Arts:

Our reading series is McGraw Hill Wonders. The series is published by the same company that distributes  Everyday Math. We are very excited to use the series that includes much more reading and writing material for the students. 

Reading:  For each Chapter we will read stories from our Reading hardcover book. We will also read small books that are leveled to each child's ability. Every six days we will have a test covering reading comprehension, the skill and vocabulary words. The day of the test, we will receive the spelling and vocabulary words for the next week’s story. (This year, we will not be grading and counting ALL of the tests for the report card.)

Phonics:  In each story we will learn (or review) a phonics skill; a different sound each week.  For example, we might have the /oo/ sound like in true, too, flew.

Spelling:  Each story will also have 15 Spelling words. We will have a pretest a day or two after receiving the words and a post test on the day of the Reading test. Anyone with everything correct on the pretest does not have to take the post test (this applies only to Spelling). 

Grammar/ Language:  Grammar is included in the every day lessons. The first chapter includes identifying complete sentences, types of sentences, nouns, and plurals (adding -s or -es).

Writing: We will be completing daily writing assignments, as well as writing and drawing in a personal journal.

12:15-12:45 Lunch: Please send lunch money in an envelope with your child’s name and ID number.

12:50-1:15 Recess: Recess is always outdoors, except for rain or extreme cold. Please dress your child appropriately.

1:15-1:30  D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read):      Students will read independently for 10-15 minutes each day in school. They should also read, or be read to, at home. A calendar will be sent home each month to keep track of their reading. If the student returns the calendar to school they will be rewarded for participating in the program. Students will also receive a calendar that stays in school. I will stamp the calendar each day if the student is reading quietly and following the rules. At the end of the month, the students with a stamp filled calendar will receive a reward. (Absent days are not counted.)

1:30-2:40  Everyday Math: At the beginning of each unit (chapter) the students will bring home a “Family Letter” that includes an overview of the unit and a page on how to help with homework in that unit.

Please keep the “Family Letters” for reference while doing homework. The letters will provide homework hints throughout the school year.

Along with our Math series, students should memorize the Math facts so they can immediately answer a simple addition or subtraction fact such as 6+5=11. This is a very important skill that must be mastered in second grade.   

2:40-3:10  Cursive Writing or Social Studies/Science are not tested but we will discuss many topics in these areas throughout the year.

3:10-3:20  End of the Day Routine: Each student will be given a homework folder and agenda notebook to take home each night. They will be given time to copy the homework assignment from the board and place the homework book in their folder. Homework is a small written review of the work learned in school. Please be sure it is completed neatly, in pencil, and returned the next day.

Please check and empty your child's folder every night.
