Students are to read for 20 minutes each night for homework, as part of a schoolwide initiative. Written math homework may come home a few times per week, after the first Unit of math. You can find daily information (such as any math homework) posted on our Google Classroom page.
ELA:
We use the Wonders Reading Series from K-5. In the second grade, we have a 6 day rotation. This means that your child's reading and spelling tests will not be on a specified day, but instead will fall 6 days from when they receive their new spelling list. This gives us an extra day to teach materials and really go in-depth into the subject, in lieu of having a 5 day cycle with tests each Friday.
This year we will begin using the Fundations program as a supplement to our Wonders series. It focuses on phonics. Your child will be familiar with it from their Kindergarten and First Grade classrooms.
Math:
We are using the Everyday Math Series, which provides students with a hands-on approach to math.
The 2022-2023 school year will be my 11th year teaching second grade at Valley View. It's truly a blast!
I graduated from Penn State University and the Schreyer Honors College at PSU with a degree in Elementary Education, K-6. I studied abroad for a year, and spent time attending Chichester University, UK and Jönköping University, Sweden. I am quite active in our teacher community; I'm on the PBIS Tiers 1 and 2 teams, attend conferences yearly, conduct Professional Learning Community Book Clubs, and love to share what I learn with my colleagues.
I enjoy being active, the outdoors, and traveling. My husband and I hike and camp often, with some short backpacking trips thrown in from time-to-time. Visiting my brother and sisters means heading to Hawaii, Denver, or St. Petersburg, Florida. Visiting friends could mean Sweden, Spain, The Netherlands, or Utah. We are extremely fortunate to have a multitude of couches to surf!
Nevertheless, I am passionate about learning about new places and their people, traditions, customs, flora, and fauna and bring this into the classroom to engage my students and share the natural world with them.
