Look What's Happening

March 16th

Our Kindergarten Musical will be Wednesday, April 15th at 7pm in the High School Auditorium.  Students may dress as a Disney Character or spring clothing.

Our Kindergarten Graduation will be Thursday, May 14, at 9:00 am in the Gym.  It will be about 45 minutes. Children will receive their diploma, caps and gowns will be provided.  Please mark this on your calendar!  You won’t want to miss it!  Parents may take their child after the ceremony, but must sign them out at the office before leaving.

Wednesday, March 18th is information night for children attending kindergarten this fall.

The next Kindergarten Curriculum Workshop will be Thursday, March 26th.  It will take place in our library at 6pm.  We hope you can come!

Please remember to return your Penny’s for Patients coin box if you wish to participate.  The 3 classes that raise the most money will get a pasta, pizza party, or Subway party!  Thank you in advance!

Thank you P.T.A. and The Cat in the Hat for a fun-tastic Dr. Seuss Day!!  The cupcakes were delicious, the readers were fun, and the stove pipe hats were awesome!

Spring pictures are Thursday, March 12th. All children will be photographed and are pictures are sent home for your review.

Group Bunny photos will be taken Tuesday, March 10th. Please send in payment and order form if you wish to purchase.

On Monday, 3-1 we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss Read Across America Day! The P.T.A. and The Cat in the Hat will provide us with cupcakes and our very own stove pipe hats. (Make sure you store your stove pipe hat in a safe place until next year.  You will need it to celebrate Dr. Seuss Day in FIRST grade!)

Miss Jackie, our student teacher from Marywood, will celebrate her last day with us on Friday, March 6th.  Please send in a treat if you would like.  We loved learning and growing with her these past weeks. We are really going to miss her.  Please come back and visit Miss Jackie!!

February 24th

We will begin our next science unit on DINOSAURS!  We have many fun songs and activities planned to learn all about this interesting topic!

If your child has any dinosaur related toys, books, items etc. he/she may bring them in to show to the class.

We will be learning a little bit about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in honor of President’s Day!

We are sending home a leveled book for homework every night.  Please send the book, bad, and log every day.  There will be no homework on weekends.

February 3rd

Practice reading 3-letter-words like MOP, RUN, YAM, SIP MEN, etc.  It is important that your child be able to read these words without frustration.

 The children will be checked on letters, sounds, sight words, and blending.  Please practice all of these skills at home. Report cards will be given on January 24th.

We go out most days for recess.  Please dress your child for the weather.  It would be helpful to practice zipping coats and tying shoes at home.

Practice blending letters to read words like: dot, Tim, and hot.  All letter sounds have been taught so feel free to use any letters in your words.

The January book order was sent home.  Orders are due on Wednesday, January 8th.  Thank you in advance to all who order.

November 25th

Please label all hats, gloves, and winter accessories. We will continue to go outside even in cold weather.

We will be getting ready for Christmas in our classroom!

This week we hope to get a visit from Santa’s elves. They may even leave us a treat in our Magical Stocking! 

School Picture Re-take Day is Wednesday, December 4th. Please let me know if you would like your child picture taken.

On Tuesday, November 26th, we will have a Charlie Brown inspired Thanksgiving feast. A note was sent home asking for help with some of the supplies. Thank you in advance to all who donate.

November 18th

On Friday, 11-22, we will be going to the FROZEN 2!  Permission slips and $10 must be returned in order to attend. No dress code is required on this day. We can hardly wait!  It’s going to be SNOW much fun!

We have taught all letters and sounds as part of our Fundations phonics program.  Your child should know all 26 letters and sounds.  We are practicing blending these sounds together to read words like, zip, tan, ax, gum etc.

We will be learning about the very first Thanksgiving and having a small “feast” in our classroom on Tuesday, 11-26. A note will be sent home with more details.

Many children are complaining they are thirsty and hungry at the end of the day.  You may wish to pack a water bottle, or extra drink and/or snack.


November 11th

There is NO SCHOOL on Monday, 11-11 due to Veteran’s Day.

We will be learning about Veteran’s Day and making a fun craft for this patriotic holiday.  We love the USA!

Please practice ALL sight words every night.  The next sight word list was sent home. Your child needs to be able to read them easily in order to be a good reader.  Please let me know if you need any additional activities to practice this skill at home.

November 4th

Kindergarten report cards will be sent home on Tuesday November 5th. Please sign and return the envelope.

Parent teacher conferences will be held on November 7th and 8th.  The children will be dismissed at 11:47 on both days.

A note to sign up for a conference was sent home and appointments were made. If you would rather conference by phone, just let me know.

We will learn about Election Day by learning about the President and how/why American’s vote.  We will be having our own election in school, voting for vanilla or chocolate ice cream by secret ballot!!! We will tally the votes and graph our results. We love America!

Our class will be visiting the Book Fair. More info on which day will follow. You can also shop with your child during conferences on November 7th or 8th, or your child can shop with our class.  Please send money in a sealed envelope with your child’s name, amount, and BOOK FAIR written on it.  This will avoid any confusion with lunch money. 

Please remember to dress your child for the weather.  Can you also please practice buttoning and zippering your child’s coat at home?

October 28th

Thank you PTA for a fantastic Red Ribbon Week!  We had fun, got lots of treats, all while focusing on the dangers of drugs and alcohol. 

You may wish to send your child to school with a coloring book, sticker book, activity book, etc. to use as at indoor recess time (inclement weather).  He/she can also bring a small toy in his/her backpack until recess time.  Please be sure that everything is labeled and your child is reminded to be responsible and use them only when allowed.

We will be visiting the Book Fair  the first week in November. More information will follow.

The children will be dismissed at 11:47 on October 31st.  Lunches will be served.  Children should come dressed in their costumes.  The parade will be at 8:50am.  Please label all costume parts in case they get lost.  Happy Halloween!

October 7th

Next week, there is no school for students on Columbus Day, Monday, October  14th.   Enjoy the day off!

Please pack a small toy and/or activity book for your child to use at recess.  It should be labeled with his/her name and must fit in his/her backpack.  Please pack one every day as we sometimes use the blacktop for recess.

 

Please send in an extra water bottle for your child after recess.  Lots of children have been eating an extra snack in the afternoon as well.

October is Fire Prevention month.  We will learn about FIRE SAFETY this month! We will be learning songs, reading stories, and doing crafts related to this important month!  The Wilson Fire Company will treat us to a special presentation about what to do in case of a fire. Please talk about this important subject at home.

 

We are beginning to teach the children how to read 3-letter-words using the sounds we have taught.  For example, they can read: FUN, CAB, SIT and GUM.


This week we will begin a new science theme on nocturnal animals!


Please practice cutting with your child at home.  Many of the children are having difficulty.  You can draw some simple shapes for them to cut out to practice cutting on a line.  This will improve their fine motor skills.

 

We will have a fashion show with our classmates on Thursday, 10-11, to conclude our ABC Boot Camp.  Thank you for all your help with this program!

 


September 30th

Please continue to practice printing numbers at home, as we will continue to do at school.  Numbers: 2,3,4,5, and 8 can be difficult for some students to print. 

We are almost finished with our first author study.  Ask your child about Eric Carle!

We will be having an ABC Boot Camp Fashion Show!  More information will be sent home.  We are doing great learning our letters and sounds.

Our letter test will be on October 4th.  If your child does not know all the letters of the alphabet, please practice every night.  He/she cannot learn to read without knowing letter names.

The October book order is due on Friday, October 4th. Please consider ordering to support our classroom.

We loved our first author study on Eric Carle.  We read lots of his books, did some crafts and learned about the author himself!

I have been checking all students on their letter recognition.  Flash cards were sent home for extra practice for children who did not know all their letter names yet.  The children will be rechecked in a few weeks.  This is the single most important skill for reading success.

There will be a 11:47 am dismissal on Friday, September 27th.  Breakfast and lunches will be served.  Please send in a note if your child is not going home on their assigned bus and is a walker this day.

Learning about space was out of this world!  We began a new science unit on the life cycle of the caterpillar.  We have 5 hungry caterpillars of our own!  We can’t wait for them to become beautiful butterflies!

May 6th

Vehicle Day was AWESOME!  The mounted police, EMS, SWAT, Army, police and fire vehicles were so interesting. We had so much fun learning, seeing, and exploring!  Ask your child which vehicle was their favorite?  Thank you Officer Tom and Chief Salerno.

The Scranton Aquarium was AMAZING!  Thank you PTA and chaperones.  Ask your child what their favorite part was.

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6th-10th.  Please refer to the note send home to participate in these Super Hero themed days.

We are also practicing reading CVC (3 letter) words in school every day.  These are words like MOP, RUN, YAM, ZIP, MEN, etc. It is important that your child be able to read these easily and without         frustration.

January 7th

Please review Unit 1 and 2 sight words nightly.  Your child should be able to read all of Unit 1 without hesitation, as well as Unit 2 words.

The children will be tested on all of these words on Friday, January 11th.   Another list of both units was sent home for your convenience.

We go out most days for recess.  Please dress your child for the weather.  It would be helpful to practice zipping coats and tying shoes at home.

Practice blending letters to read words like: dot, Tim, and hot.  All letter sounds have been taught so feel free to use any letters in your words.

The January book order was sent home.  Orders are due on Wednesday, January 9th.  Thank you in advance to all who order.

Friday, December 21st, will be our Christmas party.  Anybody wishing to bring in a treat may do so. We can wait to spread some holiday cheer and celebrate! We have 21 students!

December 3rd

Our Polar Express Party will be Tuesday, 12-18.  Children can wear their pajamas on this special day, and even bring in a robe and/or slippers to use.  They can also bring in a stuffed animal to keep them company.  We are so excited!

We began our next author study on Laura Numeroff.  She wrote the “If You Give a Moose a Muffin” series.  We will end with a celebration culminating all her books.  We are so excited.

Please remember to dress your child for the weather.  Can you please practice buttoning and zippering your child’s coat and tying his/her shoes at home?

November 19th

There is an 11:47 dismissal on Wednesday, 11-21.  Lunches will be served. NO SCHOOL from Thursday, 11-22 through Monday, 11-26th.  School resumes on Tuesday, 12-27. Have a Happy Thanksgiving! Gobble!  Gobble!

Many children are complaining they are thirsty and hungry at the end of the day.  You may wish to pack a water bottle, or extra drink and/or snack.

We will be having a feast in our classroom inspired by, ”A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” on Tuesday, November 20 th.

November 12th

There is NO SCHOOL on Monday, 11-12 due to Veteran’s Day.

We will be learning about Veteran’s Day and making a fun craft for this patriotic holiday.  We love the USA!

We will be going to see The Grinch on Friday, Nov. 16th.  Please return your child’s permission slip and $7, if you have not done so already.  Children do not have to wear dress code this day.

Please practice ALL sight words every night.  The next sight word list was sent home. Your child needs to be able to read them easily in order to be a good reader.  Please let me know if you need any additional activities to practice this skill at home.

We are almost finished learning letters and sounds as part of our Fundations phonics program.  Your child should know all 26 letter names AND sounds by the end of this month.

It was so nice talking with all of my wonderful parents at conferences.  Please feel free to contact me anytime with questions or concerns. The children did a GREAT JOB on their first report card!  I am so proud of all of them!

November 5th

Kindergarten report cards will be sent home on Tuesday November 6th. Parent teacher conferences will be held on November 7th and 8th.  The children will be dismissed at 11:47 on both days. A note to sign up for a conference was sent home and appointments were made.

We will learn about Election Day on November 6th.  We will learn about the President and how/why American’s vote.  We love America!

Our class will be visiting the Book Fair on Thursday, November 8th. .  You can shop with your child on these days during conferences, or your child can shop with our class.  Please send money in a sealed envelope with your child’s name, amount, and BOOK FAIR written on it.  This will avoid any confusion with lunch money.

We are learning about farms and farm animals.  If your child has any farm related toys/books, please send them in to share with the class.

Monday, October 29th is our Curriculum Workshop for parents.  It will be held at the high school auditorium.  Please consider going. Upcoming skills, helpful hints, extra practice ideas, and our report card will all be discussed.

October 8th

There is no school for students on Columbus Day, Monday, October  8th.   Enjoy the day off!

Please pack a small toy and/or activity book for your child to use at recess.  It should be labeled with his/her name and must fit in his/her backpack.  Please pack one every day as we sometimes use the blacktop for recess.

October is Fire Prevention month.  We will learn about FIRE SAFETY this month! We will be learning songs, reading stories, and doing crafts related to this important month!  The Wilson Fire Company will treat us to a special presentation about what to do in case of a fire. Please talk about this important subject at home.

 

We are beginning to teach the children how to read 3-letter-words using the sounds we have taught.  For example, they can read: FUN, CAB, SIT and GUM.


This week we will begin a new science theme on nocturnal animals!


Please practice cutting with your child at home.  Many of the children are having difficulty.  You can draw some simple shapes for them to cut out to practice cutting on a line.  This will improve their fine motor skills.

October 1

Our letter test will be on October 5th.  If your child does not know all the letters of the alphabet, please practice every night.  He/she cannot learn to read without knowing letter names.

I have been checking all students on their letter recognition.  Flash cards were sent home for extra practice for children who did not know all their letter names yet.  The children will be rechecked in a few weeks.  This is the single most important skill for reading success.

There will be a 11:47 am dismissal on Friday, September 27th.  Breakfast and lunches will be served.  Please send in a note if your child is not going home on their assigned bus and is a walker this day.

Please remember to pack an extra drink or water bottle for the afternoon.

Smens (scented pens), Smencils, (scented pencils), and lollipops are for sale.  Please send in money in an envelope clearly marked with your child’s name and their choice. Smencils and lollipops are $1.  Smens are $2
